Consider the futility of trying to teach algebra to a dog.
Compare that to the dilemma faced by intelligent political candidates, Republicans and Democrats alike, when they run for office in areas of the country dominated by the Tea Party. In such areas, all attempts to win support by explaining the facts are doomed to failure, No matter how clearly facts are presented they have no standing in an ideology based on cultivated ignorance.
Try to teach algebra to a dog? Try to present facts to the Tea Party?
There's really no difference, is there?
