Conservatism Will Always Lose The Youth Vote

Dear Conservatives,

Thank you for ceding the youth vote.

I know you haven't a clue as to why young people overwhelmingly reject your vaunted "traditional values" despite your wholehearted and relentless efforts to impose them on every member of our pluralistic, uniquely-American culture.

Because I sincerely believe that a country with a two-party political system flourishes and thrives when both parties are actively engaged in realpolitik rather than moral or ideological posturing, I will try to help you see how you can renew contact with young Americans, and perhaps with reality itself in the process.

However, it is precisely because I know the reason for your youth dilemma that I am not optimistic that what I have to say will be understood, let alone deemed worthy of your consideration. For that reason, and because your efforts to reconnect with America's youth have been laughable, the comic strip below seemed the perfect vehicle to introduce my suggested remedy.

Yes, Pig, times have changed. They always do.

Recognition is the easy part. The hard part is learning to adapt to, and perhaps even embrace, those changes. Doing that, however, requires more than rewording one's rhetoric while clinging to the same old policies and practices that oblige the world to reject change.

Young people don't carry historical baggage tying them to the past and its old ways. The changed world and all that it offers is the only world they have ever known, and they are quite comfortable in it.

It is you, and your demand that they reject their world for one that exists only in your memory that turns them off. As a case in point consider this headline which followed last week's CPAC:

Young Republicans Find Fault With Elders on List of Social Issues

I know the story linked here and above appeared in the hated New York Times, but that is precisely why it is much more likely to tell you what you need to hear than anything emanating from the right-wing, echo chamber that is FOX News.

Hoping for the renewal of a vibrant, reality-based GOP, I am

Sincerely,

A Progressive American Voter
